Liebster Blog Award

I was pretty excited yesterday when I found out that I had been nominated for a blog award, by my fellow coffee mug swap buddy, Abbie @The Envelope Keeper:

Liebster is a German word for "favorite" and this award is meant to recognize your favorite blogs that have less than 200 followers. In all my Google searching, I can't (for the life of me) figure out who started this award, but it's been spreading...almost like a chain email...for a long time now.

When you receive the Liebster award, you are supposed to do the following:
  • Post the award on your blog
  • Show your thanks to the blogger who gave you the award (by linking back to her/him)
  • Choose five up-and-coming blogs, that have less then 200 followers
  • List those five blogs you gave the award to, with links to their sites, and make sure they know that then were nominated (so that they can continue spreading the award), via commenting on their blog, Facebook or Twitter
My Liebster Blog award winners are...

*Bhrett @Lost in Relocation - a fellow knitter (like me), who has great Monday Inspiration posts, just opened up a new shop and craves adventure & peace in her life!

*Nina @peace.love. & good food. - this girl is fabulous! She is a regular weekly vlogger linking up for Stop & Smell the Roses and her passion for food will blow you away. She and I also laugh because we basically switched spots...I'm from the Midwest (IL) and moved to Charlotte, and she is from Charlotte and moved to the Midwest (IL)! :)

*Leah @Living Life as a Godly Woman - this girl not only discusses being a woman of God and how she puts God in her marriage, but she has to be one of the thriftiest people I know/follow. She finds the coolest things at thrift stores and yard sales, and for super cheap...and then transforms them into something amazing for the home. Check out this old trunk makeover, it's one of my favorites!

*April @a little of this and that - I don't even remember how I came across April's blog, but I know it was recently and it was because of her blog post about Wilmington, NC (I absolutely love that place). She writes about a lot of different things - fashion, decorating, life. Her fashion staples are cardigans & ballet flats...um, mine too, I'm thinking we should be best friends! ;)

*Ashley @Any Lovely Thing - can I just say, this girl's eye for photography, food, entertaining, and fashion will amaze you! She is always dressed "to the nines" (see here) and really knows how to throw a party (and see here)!

Join me in checking out these ladies' blogs - and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Thanks again Abbie for nominating me, it's my 1st blog award! And here's hoping that everyone continues to spread the award to even more fellow bloggers.

Another Surprise Package!

I can't say it enough...I love getting mail, especially packages! Anyone else with me??
They just always have such a nice, personal touch & it makes a person feel good to know that someone out there is thinking about them and wanting to brighten their day, just a little bit.

I met Jenn when I was living in Monterey, CA. I was having a hard time meeting people (as is sometimes the case when you move somewhere not knowing anyone) and decided to join this knitting group on Meetup. The group contained about 5-10 ladies (all different ages) who got together every week to eat, knit & chat...it was a blast! Anyway, Jenn was one of the leaders of the group and we very quickly became good friends...going to get coffee or dinner, taking short road trips, attending the midnight release of Twilight's New Moon at the local Borders, and even taking a sewing class together. Our love for knitting, DIY, Twilight books/movies, etc. bonded us for life, I'm pretty sure! :)

Have I mentioned that she is one of the craftiest people I know?! She knits, crochets, paints, cooks, makes handmade cards, sews...you name it, she does it...or she'll figure out how to do it! She has such great ideas - I just love them all. She has a blog too - Piles of Patterns, and she's promised me that she'll be updating soon!!

So I received this uber-thoughtful package from her and had to share it:

It was partly a belated birthday gift - even the gift bag was personalized!

Cutest handmade card AND envelope - it says "Sparkle & Shine"

Some AMAZING sea salt caramels from Lula's Chocolates in Monterey (I also featured them here on Friday - so you can see what the caramels actually looked like). Needless to say, they're gone by now, not a trace of them left! :)

A darling bookmark that displays the quote: "Where there is love there is life" ~Mahatma Gandhi. I am currently putting it to good use, as I'm starting the 3rd book in the Fifty Shades of Grey series!

Some fun 'create-your-own' magnets...you just stick a picture or piece of scrapbook paper or whatever you want behind the glass, stick the magnet on and you have personalized magnets for your fridge! Very cool idea - will have to share my finished product when I'm done.

And finally, a beautiful, handmade cowl - made from jersey knit material. It is soft, light-weight AND reversible (you can see both sides in the pic)!! I love it and have a feeling that I'm going to get A LOT of use out of it.

So as if I hadn't listed out a lot of ideas & suggestions for care packages here, there are many more options above, if you enjoy DIY/crafts/sewing/etc. Jenn knows me SO well, and this package screams it - I love her thoughtfulness and can't wait to send her one right back!! Thanks Jenn :)

Do you all have any other items you enjoy receiving in the mail or in packages? Please share!!

Fall Mix

A few weeks ago, I decided to do something nice for my coworkers. I recently had to work away from the office for a few weeks and deal with some issues my mom was having with her health. Everyone at work was very supportive and concerned, constantly sending me emails to check-in on me and my family. And I REALLY appreciated it! So I wanted to do something nice for them, just something little...and I found this idea on another blog (at the moment, it's escaping me where I saw it...but I tweaked the contents a little):

So they are Ball jars filled with
  • Cheezits
  • Cocoa Puffs cereal
  • Cheerios
  • Candy corn
  • Reeses Pieces
  • Pretzels
And everyone loved them! I attached the orange ribbon and wrote a short thank-you note, placing it on everyone's desk as a surprise office snack! I think they were a hit, because a few of them are already empty! :)

I think it's such a cute idea because you could really fill jars with all kinds of things to create a holiday- or color-themed snack (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patty's Day, 4th of July, etc.)...I'm thinking I might make these a staple for little gifts here and there for friends/family!

Rockin' the Playlist

I just got back from, what's now becoming, my usual Saturday run. This morning was pretty chilly, but the sun was out which created a little bit of warmth. I bundled up (I hate being cold on a run), turned on my playlist and proceeded to run 6 miles. Here's where I hit each of my miles:

Mile 1: 12:14
Mile 2: 25:01
Mile 3: 37:17
Mile 4: 50:09
Mile 5: 1:03:18
Mile 6/Total: 1:16:24     <--------I ran a different trail (to the end and back) so I didn't run as far as last time
Avg. min/mi: 12:42        <--------MUCH better than last time

It wasn't easy...the wind in Omaha is ridiculous. It literally felt like it was pushing me back and I really had to work hard to keep on going. But, it feels so good now that it's over! :) I thought I'd share my "run" playlist with all of you, which is mostly new (and some old) hip hop/rap...yeah, anything upbeat keeps me going!

Strip Me - Natasha Bedingfield  <--my new favorite song
Not Afraid - Eminem
Love the Way You Lie - Eminem/Rihanna
Like a G6 - Far East Movement
Airplanes - B.O.B./Hayley Williams
Lips of an Angel - Hinder
Tattoo - Jordin Sparks
California Girls - Katy Perry/Snoop Dog
I Kissed a Girl - Katy Perry
Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Lollipop - Lil Wayne/Static Major/Kanye
Secrets - OneRepublic
Disturbia - Rihanna
Umbrella - Rihanna/Jay-Z
Dynamite & Break Your Heart - Taio Cruz
Don't Trust Me - 3OH!3
Streetwalker - Delta Spirit
Piece of Me - Britney Spears
Uprising - Muse
Whip My Hair - Willow
Can't Be Tamed & Who Owns My Heart - Miley Cyrus
Take It Off, Tik Tok, Your Love is My Drug & We R Who We R - Ke$ha
Boom Boom Pow & I Gotta Feeling- Black Eyed Peas

And then mixed in with all of those are older rap songs from a mixed CD I made years ago and uploaded to my iTunes...includes Yeah (Usher), Bump Bump Bump (B2K), Right Thurr (Chingy) & Dirt Off Your Shoulders (Jay-Z).  Hehe, don't laugh...these songs all get me pumped up as I'm running, but okay, sometimes make me want to stop my run and start busting a move! ;)

Anyway, I just made some Trader Joes 'Reduced Fat' Brownies, ate some lunch and plan to enjoy the rest of this fall afternoon. I'm also hoping to get some sewing/knitting done this weekend, I have been missing my crafty time! Don't forget about Daylight Savings Time...so glad we get to add an hour onto sleep (I always enjoy more sleep) but not so glad about it getting dark so early in the day.

Happy Saturday

M.I.A.

I feel like I haven't blogged in forever...or at least given a substantial post worth viewing! ;) I have so many things I want to blog about (e.g. reviews on places to go/eat/see in Monterey; my friend Jenn and I sewed together an apron...yes, an apron, and I love it; and of course I'll want to blog about the road trip)...the blog just might be on hiatus for the next week or two while I get through this moving across country!! I am always a "list maker", but boy oh boy, you should see all of the lists I've been making...ridiculous!!! Hopefully it'll keep me on-task, less stressed and make things run much more smoothly.

But real quick, I just wanted to say how glad I am that I started blogging...I'm not sure my posts have been super exciting or have changed anyone's life...but it has opened up this whole new world to me. I *love* reading all of these other blogs...they are so inspiring (craftwise, foodwise, exercisewise, etc.) and everyday I take out time in the morning to read up on all of the blogs I follow. When my husband and I reunite, I'm sure he'll think I'm crazy and "blog obsessed", but it's so easy to do. Anyway, I'm just really enjoying this new place for creativity, collaboration and just pure FUN! That's all... :)

Now this is a Craft Table!

Yeah, so I stumbled upon this yesterday while looking for decorating ideas (for the NEW place)! We will be using the 2nd bedroom as an office/craft room.

And this table is amazing...I've been wanting some sort of bins to hold/display my yarn...and this is PERFECT! I can put my yarn in the bins on one side, and my fabric on the other side...and my little sewing machine can sit on top.

*There's a really cute stool that goes with it too (maybe I could even get a stool for each side)! :)

Yeah, I think it's a definite purchase!

To Dye For

Well, I figured that it was about time that I blogged about my newest knitting obsession...dyeing yarn at home! I've been knitting for about 3 years now. I started out buying the inexpensive, easily attainable yarn at Hobby Lobby, even Walmart. There's nothing wrong with this yarn...I still buy it. However, as the years have passed, my taste has gotten a little bit more expensive...shopping at LYS's (Local Yarn Shoppes) that carry fancy shmancy yarn that takes a bit more out of the pocketbook. And since I have moved to Monterey and joined the local knitting group...I have been introduced to the latest trend in the fiber fabulous yarn world...indie dyers, hand-painted yarn, hand-dyed yarn, etc. Yarn that started out as a plain canvas and has been dyed to create masterpieces (literally), most of them even having names (see here).

So, after doing a little research, I decided to venture out and try to dye my own yarn. I read a few tutorials...here...and here. And then just decided to go for it. Here is a skein of yarn I dyed about a month ago...and a short tutorial on how I went about the dying process:

"Pretty in Pink"

Step 1: Gather materials: Crock pot, Wilton's Icing Dye, Vinegar, Measuring Cup, H2O

Step 2: Choose color(s) you want to dye with. For "Pretty in Pink" I chose to use only 1 dye, Rose. You may dye with as many colors as you want.

Step 3: Fill the crock pot with 1/2 cup of Vinegar, place skein to dye in the crock pot and fill with H2O until the skein is covered. Let it soak for about 20-30 minute in the vinegar/H2O solution.

Step 4: Turn crock pot on high and let it begin to heat up to about a warm temperature.
Step 5: While it is heating up, mix 1/4 tbsp. of Wilton's Icing Dye with about 1 cup of boiling water in a measuring cup or mason jar. The icing dye comes in a gel form, so make sure the water is boiling to ensure it is completely dissolved. Once completely dissolved, pour dye into crock pot as it reaches the warm temperature.

Skein and dye in crock pot heating up

Step 6: Let skein dye in crock pot for 1 hour, reaching the temperature on the High setting, but not to a boil. Check and make sure that the skein has taken up all or most of the dye by dipping a spoon into the dye water...the water should be mostly, if not completely clear. Turn off the crock pot, take the lid off and let cool (until the skein and water reaches room temperature).

Step 7: Rinse skein (very little to no dye should be seen when rinsing) and I also soak the skein in some Soak wash (if I have some on hand) to get the vinegar-like smell to go away.
Step 8: Hang the skein to dry (to speed up the process, I typically put a fan to it) and re-skein if necessary. (Note: I didn't re-skein this one...I liked how it looked with the variations of pink)

And, TA-DA...I got a little something like this:

You can see where the dye picked up more in some areas than others, but it gives it a cool effect!
Overall, I was very happy with this skein...it is posted on my Etsy shop!! :)

And here is another skein that I dyed (using a different method) and a short tutorial on its process:

"Rustic Skies"

Step 1: Gather materials: Canning pot, saran wrap (the good kind, NOT the cheap kind or it might melt to the skein), Wilton's Icing Dyes, glass pie plate, squeeze bottles (found at Walmart), paper towels, H2O

For this skein, I used Wilton's Icing Dyes: Violet and Brown

Canning pot...sorry not as many pictures of this process :)

Step 2: Soak yarn like previous tutorial (I typically use my crock pot for this soaking as well, without turning it on) in vinegar/H2O solution for 20-30 minutes.

Step 3: While yarn is soaking, prepare dye the same way and pour into squeeze bottle(s). It helps to let the dye mixture cool a bit before pouring into squeeze bottle(s).

Step. 4: Lay out a few layers of saran wrap onto flat surface (helps to put newspaper or plastic table cloth underneath to protect surface). Once skein has soaked, ring skein out and place onto saran wrap.

Step 5: Apply dye however you like to your skein...lengthwise, stripes, zig-zags, etc. You may want to flip skein over and apply dye to other side as well. Wrap skein up in saran wrap (bring top down over skein, bring bottom up over skein and roll into a pinwheel...if saran wrap has too much liquid from the dye, you can wipe up with paper towels or transfer skein to new saran wrap and wrap up.

Step 6: Cover bottom of canning pot with water, place glass pie plate onto jar rack upside down and bring water to a boil. Place pinwheel-wrapped skein on the center of the pie plate, like so:

Step 7: Cover with lid and let steam in the canning pot for 1 hour. After the 1 hour, turn stove off, take lid off and LET COOL...the plastic and skein will be hot. Once cooled, unwrap skein and rinse/wash/dry like first tutorial.

And, VOILA:

I re-skeined this one to get a more variegated look.
It is also on sale in my Etsy shop! :)

Well, there you have it...2 methods of dyeing yarn that I have experimented with. I am nowhere near an expert on this and am learning more and more about it each time I attempt to dye. But it is really fun to experiment, especially with different color combinations...and I am proud to say I sold 2 of my dyed skeins:

"Peaches 'n Cream" & "Mermaid Tails"

It was a proud moment but I was kind of sad to see them go. :( Anyway, this was a super-long post, hope you all have made it this far and enjoyed reading about yarn-dying! Thanks for reading!

Knit & Crochet Blog Week: Day 5

Location, Location, Location

Where do you like to indulge in your craft? Is your favorite arm chair your little knitting cubby area, or do you prefer to ‘knit in public’? Do you like to crochet in the great outdoors, perhaps, or knit in the bath, or at the pub?

Day 5:

I knit at home a lot on the couch...but I meet up weekly to knit with a group of girls/ladies at various restaurants/pubs around the Monterey area! We love it and it is so much fun to knit with others! We talk about knitting until we're blue in the face! ;)

Knit & Crochet Blog Week: Day 4

A New Skill

Is there a skill related to your hobby that you hope to learn one day? maybe you’re a crocheter who’d also like to knit? Maybe you’d like to learn to knit continental, knit backwards, try cables or attempt stranded colourwork.

Day 4:

My list of things I'd like to learn:
  • Continental knitting (holding yarn with left hand)
  • Stranded colourwork
  • Knit backwards (I honestly have never heard about this)
  • Learn how to crochet more (I did start crocheting earlier this year, but am not that great at it yet)

Knit & Crochet Blog Week: Day 3

One Great Knitter
Write about a knitter whose work (whether because of project choice, photography, styling, scale of projects, stash, etc) you enjoy. If they have an enjoyable blog, you might find it a good opportunity to send a smile their way.

Day 3 Answer:

Well...my answer will be a little bit different that the description above. Because, currently a knitter/professional yarn dyer that I enjoy and admire is Dani from Sunshine Yarns!! I first heard about Dani's yarn after joining the knitting meet-up group that I attend weekly. A few girls in the group were talking about this yarn dyer who had Twilight-inspired skeins of yarn. I was like...hold up! What?! Oh my gosh, I've got to check this out...and I've been addicted ever since. She has become so popular, in fact, that on the days of her store update (usually Tuesdays at 11 MST), her yarn sells out in approx. 20 minutes!! It's insane!

Her eye for color and color combos is extraordinary!! She can see a picture or see something in nature and imagine a skein of yarn with those exact colors...and execute it down to the last detail! You just have to check it out. But, not only does she dye her own yarn, she also knits, blogs and personally deals with her customers in such a heart-felt way! She is amazing, basically!

For all you Twilight fans...she has colorways for Bella, Edward, Edward's Volvo, Twilight Baseball, Rosalie, Alice, Alice's Porsche, Bella's Truck, Bella's Lullaby, New Moon, Wolfsong...just to name a few. There are many more. Oh, and she has Harry Potter colorways as well. I'm telling you, she's got good stuff! :)

Day 2: Knit & Crochet Blog Week

Today's blog/Day 2:

An Inspirational Pattern

Blog about a pattern or project which you aspire to. Whether it happens to be because the skills needed are ones which you have not yet acquired, or just because it seems like a huge undertaking of time and dedication, most people feel they still have something to aspire to in their craft. If you don’t feel like you have any left of the mountain of learning yet to climb, say so!

My inspirational pattern:

Yeah, this puppy, right here!

It's a Seahorse Afghan and it's 50" x 60". I love how the pattern has the seahorses right next to each other, going different directions. I just think it's beautiful! But, come on...this thing would take months!!! It is definitely a project that would undertake lots of time and dedication. But I definitely aspire to complete it one day!

Day 1: Knit & Crochet Blog Week

So, it's Knit and Crochet Blog Week (who knew?) :) meaning there will be a new post everyday regarding knitting/crocheting! I know, you all may get tired of reading about my knitting obsession, but I support my craft!!

Another blogger, Eskimi Knits, came up with this idea, to host a Knit & Crochet Blog Week, and also created the topics for each days bloggings:

Here's todays:

Starting Out

How and when did you begin knitting/crocheting? was it a skill passed down through generations of your family, or something you learned from Knitting For Dummies? What or who made you pick up the needles/hook for the first time? Was it the celebrity knitting ‘trend’ or your great aunt Hilda?

So...

I began knitting in the Summer of 2007. I had just started graduate school at SIUC earlier that year and had met a good friend, Susan, as she was one year ahead of me in my program. I found out that she was a knitter the year prior when I came for a departmental visit. At the visit, we met all of the current students, including Susan, and she was just knitting away on a couch in the department lounge. After my first year was over, I realized that I needed a de-stresser and something to take my mind off school/thesis/etc., even if just for an hour at a time. And Susan had been nudging me to take up knitting...and that she'd teach me. She did, and I became obsessed. While we were still in school together, we worked on a few projects together, which included fingerless mittens (so cute!) and we continue to share projects and talk knitting every once in awhile...even though we're states apart! Thanks Susan! You were such a great teacher and I'm so glad you started me on such a great hobby! :)

Here's us in action on our mittens:

Craft-tastic!

So, this is a very belated post...but before the hubby left, for a pre-anniversary gift (our anniversary was March 8! Woohoo, 1 year down, many more to go)/pre-birthday gift (it's next Sat. :) )...he bought me a brand new sewing machine!

A Singer Esteem II

And this lovely case...
I was in awe!

I had been telling him for the past 6 months that I wanted a sewing machine and the hubby pretty much said "Don't you have enough hobbies?!" :) Haha...my answer was always NO! A woman can never have enough hobbies/crafts!! So, I think after I bothered him enough, he realized that I wasn't going to give up! And I was so surprised when he got it for me...he is such a thoughtful man who supports all of my obsessive crafts!!!

Not knowing how to even thread the machine, I've mastered that thanks to some video tutorials. And I even took a shot at a simple project...and eyeglasses case (however, I'm not going to post it because it's pretty sad, haha). But, needless to say, I'm gonna need some more practice and am still getting used to my machine and sewing with it in general. So, stay tuned for some projects to come!

P.S. If any of you have sewed before, and have any tips for me, please send them my way! :)
